Ebonised London plane extending dining table

Double-ended extension

Removable leaves at either end allow a metre of length to be added whilst continuing the shape and grain of the wood slab. Leaves are stored under the table top when not in use

Scorched waney edges

The natural edges of the slab are scorched and burnished black to contrast with the rich tones of the table top and provide a smooth and satisfyingly tactile undulating edge

Resin fill

To make the most of the full length and width of this stunning slab a large void needed to be incorporated. This translucent resin fill strengthens and enhances the usability of the table top surface in this area

The clients were looking to replace an old extending dining table which they had fallen out of love with and which didn’t suit the large-scale renovation of their property. They were looking for a table with the same functionality as their existing one, but with much greater aesthetic presence within the space.

To fit their new scheme, consisting of a pallette of greys and olive-greens, wood with tonally too much orange or red wouldn’t have worked. So London plane was chosen, treated with a natural reactive stain which turns the wood this deep grey-brown colour but still retains the wonderful lacewood figuring in the grain.

The table base has horizontal supports on which the two removable extension leaves can be stowed away discretely when not in use.
