Pair of cabinets with drawers

The client’s starting point for inspiration was a pair of antique 1720s Venetian commodes he’d spotted at an antique dealer. He loved the curves and the veneer patterns but the colouring wasn’t quite right, the marble top too fussy, they were too small and had doors instead of drawers.

This is my contemporary reinterpretation, designed to sit comfortably in this classically proportioned North London townhouse renovation, surrounded by a fabulous collection of both modern and antique art and furniture.

The cabinetry is crafted from solid oak, intensely fumed all the way through to give this rich dark chocolate colouring. The legs are painstakingly hand-shaped to a curved and tapered profile. The serpentine curved drawer fronts are veneered with heavily figured ash that has been given a moody multistage stain to complement the fumed oak.

Captivating wood grain

Classical profiles

Classical shapes harmonise with more modern profiles in a balance which straddles the antique and the modern
