An elegant, sculpted piece to bring extra life to a large, contemporary entrance hall in a converted coach house.

With proportions and large flat surfaces akin to a modern art gallery, this contemporary entrance hall was crying out for something a little more organic and tactile to help lift the space and boost the stunning first impression of the property on entry. The clients were very keen on a sculptural, lightweight form that invited attention but wouldn’t overpower the space.

120 layers of stack-laminated ash veneer were used to form the basic curves of the legs, after which the forms were carved and shaped with a mixture of power and handtools into the final compound organic curves. The top is formed from resawn ash strips configured in a book-matched chevron pattern reminiscent of a feather. A 3000+ year old bog oak stringer provides a dark central detail to break the monochrome of the bleached ash, the paleness of which was needed to contrast with the large oak panel in front of which the piece sits. To enhance the tactility of the piece, a subtle texture was carved into the concaves of the leg forms, inviting and rewarding exploring eyes and wandering hands.
