Solid oak end-grain boards. The deep black colour is created by a process of applying an acetic acid solution (vinegar and iron) which reacts with the natural tannins in the oak. The end grain patterns are either subtle or striking, dependent on the lighting conditions. Restorers' gilt cream applied using a couple of different techniques provides golden graphical highlights of concentric squares.
